Apocalyptic

IMG_7995

This photo was taken from Grand Haven, MI on the shore of Lake Michigan.  There’s a power plant far in the distance spewing water vapor into the atmosphere.  A long exposure made this look really apocalyptic to me, which is a fun exercise because this is in fact a beautiful beach and town.

This was a surprising sight given how warm it has been, but the geese know best!

Thunderclouds Over Michigan

Continuing the theme of dramatic weather, we’ve had yet more storms. Here are a couple pictures at long focal lengths of approaching thunderclouds from a couple of days ago. Note in one there’s a helicopter conveniently dwarfed by a cloud mass that’s many miles beyond it. In the first photo you can see some birds that look as if they’ll be swallowed by the massive cumulonimbus. It’s deceiving because I’m sure this cloud was at least ten miles away.

Storms can be scary, but this has also been exciting. These kinds of systems are much more common in places that maintain higher temperatures throughout the year, like where I grew up in Texas.

Dramatic Weather in Michigan

It has been a wild week in West Michigan with lightning storms that I’m more used to seeing where I grew up, in Austin. Here’s a distant lightning strike I was fortunate to catch last week.

For Lovers of Photography, Travel and Michigan

Good Afternoon, fellow bloggers.  I have two photos in the West Michigan Tourist Association photo contest.  I would be super grateful if you could A) go to the WMTA Facebook Photo Contest post here (this takes you to Facebook), then give my photo(s) a like (if you feel it’s deserved) and also share on Facebook. You can like both of my photos (shown below). Check out other people’s photos too–there’s good stuff showing the beauty of this state.

First place would get my photo on the cover of their 2019 West Michigan Travel Guide, plus a couple of nights at the JW Marriott downtown which my wife and I would enjoy . Second and Third Place would get my photo in the magazine but not on the cover.

Thank you for your time and support!

On a final note, I apologize for my absence on the blog.  I’ve been preparing for the Grand Rapids ArtPrize competition in September/October and haven’t had much time to post.  I will rectify that soon!
