Still Standing

IMG_2929This tree, long dead, stands at the center of a golf course that is going back to nature.  It’s a fascinating process and this has become one of my favorite places to take pictures.

    This area, where we live, was farmland a hundred years ago. Now, it’s woods, but there are still walls in the woods that probably marked the boundaries of pastures. So we actually live in what was something else, but has gone back to woodland.

      That is interesting! My grandfather used to tell me that his father, an immigrant from England, worked in the lumber industry and was part of clearing some of the remaining old growth forests in the late 1800s. The forests here seem so permanent, but it’s strange to think that they’re a return to something that was farmland for so long.

    I like this photo a lot. The stark branches silhouetted against the sky. The thought of a golf course being released and going back to nature. The management of the golf course by my place has gone around in this past year cuttting down beautiful old dead trees. Apparently to protect us humans from falling trees. I mourn the loss of habitat to hawks, owls and many other creatures.

      It is a really cool thing they’re doing! I’m interest to watch it unfold. Golf course transform a plot of land so much, I’m curious to see what happens over the next five to ten years and beyond. Thanks, Arati!
